Moving to DC, Maryland or Virginia: tags, registration and your rate

Relocation within the DMV is constant among my clients, and the insurance sequencing catches people out every time.

What is the problem?

Your policy state, your registration state and your license state all need to line up, and they do not change simultaneously. In the gap, things go wrong — proof of insurance is rejected at the motor vehicle agency, or a surcharge appears that nobody expected.

The most common version I see: a client moves to Maryland but has not yet changed their license, and a surcharge appears on the policy for exactly that reason. Once the license and registration are updated, it falls away.

How should it be sequenced?

Deliberately, and with a little slack built in. When clients move, I will often set the home policy to the closing date and push the auto and umbrella out a few weeks — giving them time to register the vehicles in the new state while maintaining continuous coverage throughout.

You generally need evidence of insurance in the new state to register the vehicles, so the policy has to be in place before the appointment, not after.

The reverse also matters: keep coverage in force as long as a vehicle is registered in the old state. Cancelling early because you have "moved" creates a registration lapse, which is a separate and avoidable problem.

What about the rate itself?

Expect it to change, sometimes substantially. Rating territories differ meaningfully across the region, and a move of a few miles across a jurisdictional line can move a premium in either direction. It is worth asking what the new address does to the account before you finalize anything.

What I recommend

  1. Tell me your closing date and your DMV or MVA appointment date, and I will sequence the policies around them.
  2. Do not cancel coverage in the old state until the registration has actually moved.
  3. Update your driver's license promptly — some surcharges are tied directly to it.
  4. Ask what the new address does to your premium before you assume it is unchanged.

Let me know when a move is coming and we will map out the dates together.

The short version

Policy state, registration state and license state all need to align, and they do not change at the same moment. Sequence the dates deliberately, keep coverage in force until registration actually moves, and expect the premium to change with the address.
